The estimated shortage of 10,000 workers across the ACT could double over the next three years when large numbers of baby boomers retire.

Public service job cutbacks in Tuesday week's Federal budget, tipped to cost Canberra up to 3000 positions, is likely to have little impact on the capital's worsening skills drought.

Today, The Canberra Times begins a three-part series on the extent of the ACT skills drought, which is worse here than anywhere else in Australia, and what could be done to fix it.

ACT Chamber of Commerce chief executive Chris Peters said business growth in the territory had been stalled for 18 months due to insufficient workers.

"About two years ago staff shortages were No13 on businesses lists of concerns. It's been No1 for about 18 months, so it is the major impediment to business growth."

The ACT Skills Commission and the chamber's research shows the ACT will continue to be hardest hit of all Australian states and territories from a shortage of skilled and unskilled workers.

Access Economics research shows the ACT's population is biased towards the 45 to 59 age group.

The demographics report compiled for the Skills Commission says the retirement timing of this age group and especially those aged 50 to 54 will have an even greater impact on the ACT workforce than it will nationally.

Access Economics expects increasing labour force participation rates up to 2010, with a reversal of that trend from 2010 to 2015 and a sharp reduction in participation after then because the main part of the baby boom generation will have reached the age of 65.

ACT Skills Commission chairman Derek Volker warns that today's delays will become tomorrow's disaster when too few people are available to look after elderly folk.

"It is not a skills problem, it's more a people problem and if we don't do something about it, it could turn into a crisis not too far down the track."

Home Help Service ACT, a not-for-profit organisation that provides in-home support to the elderly and frail aged, could place 20 people immediately in its stretched ranks of carers.

Canberra employers scouring the country and overseas for employees are competing with the remainder of the western world which is suffering a skills drought.

Mr Peters said three factors contributed to the territory's exceptional worker shortage:

Having both the lowest unemployment (2.4 per cent) and highest participation rates in Australia, which meant there weren't too many stay-at-home mothers, or unemployed, to fill job vacancies;

The ACT and Adelaide had Australia's two fastest aging populations; and

Older public servants in a former superannuation scheme had to retire before 55 to maximise their superannuation benefits.

"Canberra has the highest percentage of public servants than anywhere in Australia and they retire a decade earlier than the rest of Australia." Mr Peters said Federal budget cuts in two weeks were expected to cause a net loss of 1000 people from the Commonwealth Public Service.

At best those leaving would have wide-ranging expertise.

"It depends on what the mix is I expect the mix will be fairly broad, which would be widely welcomed by the business community, but all of those won't solve our problem."

Shortages are in all sectors, from engineering, health, trades, services and construction. Multinational construction company Bovis Lend Lease said employers were competing with unprecedented building in the booming Middle East countries, and project directors could command salaries of up to $300,000.

Hays senior regional director for Canberra Jane Donnelly said financial controllers and managers on salaries of up to $100,000 and $130,000 were in demand following the meltdown of global financial markets last year.

"Within the banking sector they are far more aware of the risk associated with certain products, they are seeking people with extensive risk analyst-type skills."

Mr Peters said the shortage meant people were finding the service in places like restaurants, hairdressing salons and workshops slower. "If you have an accident driving home tonight in your car, typically your car will sit on the panel beaters shop floor for two weeks until they can get to it. That's now. In three years time that [timeframe] will double."

What does your job mean to you ? Is it a career you’ve trained for, in a field you love and are committted to ? Do you wake up every day happy eager to get to work ? In contrast, is it a mere job, just a means to an end, a paycheck at the end of every week or month ? Is it routine and numbingly dull ? Does it make you dread getting out of bed in the morning ? Perhaps you gain your livelihood in a so-so job doing something that’s bearable, but never stimulating or challenging. It’s just okay, and you constantly tell yourself that it could be worse. Is your job some combination of all three types ? You may do something that once stimulated and excited you, but has since lost its spark, to the point where you’re now just going through the motions.

The release of the new Indiana Jones movie has got me thinking about the subject. Some archaeologists are enthusiastic, because new Indiana Jones films boost enrollments in university archaeology programs. I wonder how many of those recruits stick with it over the years and actually become archaeologists, or other types of anthropologists. How disappointed were some of them when they discovered that archaeology doesn’t really involve daily battles beteween good and evil, or bullwhip fights in far-off exotic lands ? Were they able to settle down to a life of teaching, or of patiently sifting through soil, one square foot at a time ?

How often do you think about what your job means to you and how did you choose it ? Was it a passion for a certain subject or did you back into it ? Did you study a discipline for years or receive a token day of on-the-job training ? Exactly how do most people choose their jobs ? Are there firefighters who had wanted to be a fireman since they were six years old ? Do family pressures or family career traditions determine certain choices, such as the expectation that someone will become a doctor or a lawyer just like mom or dad ? Are there people who enter a university with a specific goal in mind and are never deterred from it, or do most students enter college with some hazy sense of getting a liberal arts education, hoping that at some point some subject will click with them ? Do changing job markets and employmant statisistics seriously affect career decisions ?

How much of an impact do a field’s perks have on choices made ? For example, flight attendants are given the opportunity to travel, and insurance company employees may receive insurance premium reductions. Do such priorities shift as we move from one stage of life to another ? Lots of travel as part of a job may be a career incentive for a young single person, but it may become a job liability when someone is later raising a young family.

What role do issues related to working hours play ? Is a day job necessarily preferable to the graveyard shift ? Is a regular five day working week inherently better than a longer cycle of on-duty and off-duty days ? What about jobs that involve seasonal cycles of slow and busy periods, such as those of tax accountants and hotel workers in tourist resorts ?

How important is the geographic location of a given job opportunity or of a place-specific type of career ? There are those who want to remain in their home towns or regions, while others are dying to pull up stakes and experience new locales, or to find jobs that will pay them for having adventures in far-flung corners of the earth.

Is money always a primary consideration, or is the importance of money drastically overestimated as a deciding factor in career choice ? Certainly a high-paying job is the essential motivation and goal for some people, yet there are others who dedicate their lives to public service work or to working for justice and social change at the expense of a decent paycheck.

What points relating to temperament enter into the career decisions that we make in life ? For example, breaking into any area of show business may require a certain type of personality. How many of us could stand the discouraging frequency of rejection experienced by most would-be actors ? Does the acting bug involve both a larger than average ego, plus a larger than normal persistence of vision and resilience in the face of rejection ?

Speaking of temperaments, how do national characteristics and traditions affect career posssibilities ? In certain western countries the average person takes a job and stays in it for forty years with his or her eyes on the prize – guaranteed retirement checks. There is an overall fear of ever taking a risk. Most employees would never dream of trying to start their own businesses and people often seem reluctant even to consider changing jobs, let alone to ever consider the unthinkable concept of actually changing careers. Nothing can get in the way of that guaranteed retirement package.

That figure makes sense when you consider how much we grow over time and that a career spans at least 40 years. Over time our values, priorities, and interests change and we often find ourselves looking for something different from our work. The career we found ourselves in during our 20s may differ greatly from where we would like to be in our 50s. Although many of us realize at some point that we would like to change careers, there are many things that hold us back - lack of direction, fear, money, or uncertainty can all contribute. These simple strategies can help get you started on finding the career of your dreams.

1. Assess your strengths, weaknesses, likes and dislikes. Make a list of what you are good at and what you enjoy doing. This list should include everything you enjoy – even if it is just a hobby for you. Ideally, you want a career that allows you to use your strengths and perform work that you love doing all day. Along the same lines, you don’t want a career that doesn’t fit your interests or your skills. This will make your days long and lead to dissatisfaction in your job.

2. Research your career choices based on the preferences you identified in the first step. This may include taking a couple of professional career assessments. The benefit of career assessments is that they help identify things you aren’t able to see yourself and can suggest career possibilities that you may have overlooked or not considered. Some assessments can even tell you, based on the test results, how well you would fit in with the “typical” person in that career.

3. Explore the occupations on your list. Speak with someone currently in that career and see what they enjoy and what they dislike about it. Find out what advice they would offer someone entering that profession. If necessary, get additional training or education to further explore the field. Try contract work or an internship to test the waters.

4. Set and define goals. This is a very important step. Having a plan is critical to your success. Setting and defining your goals will help keep you on track and help you measure your progress.

5. Find a coach or mentor. Find someone that can help you through the transition. This may be a life or career coach that can support you along the journey and provide you with accountability and perspective or a mentor that can share his or her experience with you and help you learn the ropes.

6. Network. The importance of networking cannot be underestimated. The old saying “it’s not what you know but who you know” is very true. Friends or people with solid business relationships will help each other out. Many people are well connected and can possibly help you find a new job.

7. Make your move. This is the really scary part for most people. Now that you’ve done the research, explored your interests thoroughly, and set your goals, it’s time to make your move and get the job of your dreams!

While changing careers and venturing into the unknown can be scary, research and preparation can help you make a successful career transition. Finding the career of your dreams can bring you much happiness and help you in living the life of your dreams.

Hired to provide workshops on building trust in a workplace lacking it, I answered his question to the extent I could during that first session, "It's my understanding that everyone is attending," I offered. "But let me find out for sure and get back to you."

Confirming at the break that indeed, everyone on staff would be attending one of nine scheduled sessions, he balked. "Yeah, that's what they'll tell you," his anger perceptible through his tone, "but I haven't ever seen it."

By the end of the week, he was not the only staff member posing the question. It seemed if a direct supervisor wasn't in the same session as their staff, the perception was she never attended.

Management guru, Peter Drucker offers this explanation: "We perceive, as a rule, what we expect to perceive. We see largely what we expect to see, and we hear largely what we expect to hear. The unexpected is usually not received at all." In this case, the unexpected for them was management would also be learning trust building principles.

In twenty years in management, I've met too many people operating like these workshop attendees. They allow perceptions of reality to "be" their reality. They accept rumors as fact, carry baggage from work relationships passed, and harbor misconceptions now believed as truth.

These reality-challenged individuals stay cemented in their outmoded thinking and reactive behaviors. They're as stuck as a mouse in a glue trap, believing that what was the reality still is. They cling to their anger, frustrations, and feelings of past betrayal like a badge of honor. Their smoldering resentments spark new ones, causing them to miss out on building new relationships, grasping new opportunities, or seeing new viewpoints.

While our thoughts may determine what we perceive the reality to be, people who are winning at working don't stop there. They check the facts. They validate their assumptions. They challenge their thinking. And in this situation, people who are winning at working would ask the boss their question, not me.

Real is real. That's what people who are winning at working understand. They recognize that their thoughts, perceptions, and beliefs can, at times, create faulty logic, misperceptions, inaccuracies, and "their" own version of reality. They know believing the world is flat doesn't make it flat.

Be watchful of your verb tenses. It's common sense to say that all your previous duties and responsibilities should be in the past tense, and your current tasks and feats in the present tense or form. Wrong verb tenses are eyesores on resumes.

However, when faced with the subsequent question of 'can you prove it', many find this more difficult. Recruiting sales managers want to see evidence that you really are good. Evidence that you met sales targets, evidence that you won awards, that your appraisals were very positive. Simply saying you don't have it with you won't wash. If you really were top in sales jobs with awards to show for it, it's unlikely you didn't keep the evidence, so the assumption is that if you don't have evidence, it's not real. Build a brag file with your evidence and take it to interview.

4) Get your CV proof read by more than one person.

It may seem glaringly obvious but it's amazing how many times I come up against spelling mistakes in Cvs or missing words. The root cause is often the fact that a CV is often a document created years ago and updated many many times. Whilst it may have been proof read originally, it hasn't since, and adjustments can often result in words being unintentionally altered or deleted, or even whole paragraphs being deleted or pasted in by mistake. Every time to make an update, egt someone else to proof read it.

5) Always prepare questions in advance

There's several reasons for this. Firstly, in the heat of an interview it's easy to forget a question that may be essential to your final decision about the job. More importantly, having pre-prepared questions looks professional and organised. Have a spare sheet of paper ready so that you can write down the answers when they come, this will confirm to your interview that you are organised but also that the questions were genuine and matter for later reference.

Discrimination complaints are rampant, and employers do not want to be accused of choosing an applicant based on their looks, gender or race.

Complicated and elaborate fonts do not make your resume stand out positively. Artsy resumes often get thrown in the trash. They are a nuisance to read and they are distracting. They also give the impression that you are not professional. Always stick to standard text and resume paper.

Another resume mistake that job candidates make is to not update their resume before they forward it. School activities may be important when you graduate from high school, but they look ridiculous on your resume when you are 35. Technology and skill sets change as well. Do not include skills that are not needed in today's workplace. For example: Word processors have been replaced by computers and software.

Any serious discussion of Social Security cannot be squeezed down to an artificially small definition of what it is, as important as that may be, namely, retirement benefits, but we have to understand this broader scope of the protections because that is really what ties the generations together.

This is really a cross-generational program. This is not just a matter of the younger workers providing a flow of income into the fund for retired workers, whether in their family or outside.

It is actually a cross-generational set of insurance protections so that younger workers have available to them at exactly the time they need it the most of a form of social insurance that they would not have any other way.

If you dislike working with computers try to avoid vocations like web design and computer programming.

On the other hand, if you love studying the human body a career in medicine may very well be the right choice. If you enjoy mixing and matching clothing and laying out outfits than becoming a fashion designer might be a natural fit. If you love to cook consider a path in cooking.

The bottom line doing something you really love will make it that much easier and that much more rewarding down the road.

So again, examine what you are good at and what you enjoy doing and expand upon it. And make it you goal as early as possible to stay focused on doing well within that vocation. If it doesn’t work out in the end or if you simply get burned out, at least your tried and you can feel satisfied in moving onto a new interest.

And don’t be afraid to take chances. Just because you studied chemistry in school doesn’t mean you have to go into chemistry afterward. Perhaps your interests have shifted to a new line of work like advertising. Even though you didn’t study advertising in school if that’s something you’d like to try then go for it. Remember you will likely have to start in a smaller role at company but if you show your worth you can advance. Some of the best and most innovative ideas come from people doing things they shouldn’t be doing or weren’t train to do. That’s a fact.

Also keep location in mind. To some degree your city of residence can dictate your job. If you live in the middle of Hyderabad chances are there’s not quite the demand for marine biologists as there might be in Mumbai. Good India Jobs do vary city to city. So examine your current surroundings assuming that is the place you want to live and see what’s available. If you are willing to move to land that dream job then your options are that much greater.

These are just a few things to consider when deciding on a career path and then venturing on your job search. Make sure to speak to as many people as possible to get feedback, and learn and read all that the information that you can – you really can never have a enough – so you can make the best decision. Choosing a career is one of the most important steps you will ever make, so treat it as such.

Unprecedented economic growth in Western Australia means that up to 17,800 extra skilled workers will be desperately needed every year for the next ten years, according to a report launched today by education and training minister Mark McGowan. The Beyond the Resources Boom study was commissioned by the State Training Board (STB), and examines Western Australia's economic growth and the challenges faced by the state's workforce.

Skill shortages are set to remain a feature of the labour market, the report concludes, due to the strength of the economy and the ageing workforce. STB chairman Keith Spence said the demand would be met through a combination of general population growth, skilled immigration from interstate and overseas, and the development of local training initiatives.

Among the top performing occupations, in terms of projected annual average employment growth between 2006 and 2016, are intermediate mining and construction workers, plumbers, structural construction tradespersons, and mining, construction and related labourers. Demand for jobs in the mining and construction sectors is very high and a downturn is considered unlikely.

Many of these occupations are on the Australia Skilled Occupation List and the Australia MODL (Migration Occupations in Demand List), which entitles people applying for Australian immigration to extra points.

Economic projections modelled by the report indicate there is unlikely to be a boom-bust scenario in the short to medium term. This reflects the resource-driven construction boom, which is underpinned by strong growth in demand from China and record commodity prices, particularly for the state's main export, iron ore.

Skilled occupations currently make up nearly 60 per cent of the workforce and the report forecasts that overall demand for higher skills in Western Australia is likely to remain constant as a proportion of the economy. Other skilled occupations in demand include managers, administrators, professionals, associate professionals, tradespersons and related clerical, sales, transport and production workers.

But, oddly enough, after just a few minutes on stage, the fear was gone. For a long time I did not speculate about that, I was just glad the experience was over. Now, decades later as a professional speaker and coach to those making speeches, I returned to that interesting phenomenon, the vanishing fear. This is what I have learned about managing that fear.

It’s a normal and necessary occurrence. It is what keeps us sharp and focused on what we are doing. It becomes a problem only when we cannot manage the level of fear, and it prevents us from speaking when it could be beneficial to our audience, our career, or our life. So, what causes this fear, and how do we deal with it?

At its most basic level, it’s a fear of being embarrassed or humiliated in public, a rather universal fear. But it’s also more then that. The real answer came from, Dr. Ilya Prigogine, a Belgian physicist and Nobel Laureate chemist noted for his work on dissipative structures, complex systems, and irreversibility. (Don’t worry, I’ll keep this non-technical.) Dr. Prigogine discovered that human beings (and every other self-organizing structure) organize themselves and grow by taking in energy and dissipating it to the environment. Stress happens when we are exposed to more energy then we can handle. Think of those times when you were given too much work to do in too little time. You became overwhelmed. You could not dissipate the available energy.

Now, think about all the energy involved in giving a speech. You have a lot of anticipatory energy to deal with along with some anxious energy about your content. These are the “what if’s” that the little voice inside your head is bugging you about. Then there is the expectation energy from the audience. It is definitely a high energy situation before you begin to speak and it does not have an outlet.

If that is not bad enough, think about where your mental focus lies. You are saying things to yourself like, "I hope I don’t make a mistake." "Don’t flub that one line about…" "Are my clothes looking alright?" In other words, you are totally focused internally on your fears and insecurities. Do you remember the viral movie “The Secret”? The main message of that movie was what ever you focus your mind on, is what you get more of. So, if you focus on what is scaring you, what should you expect to get more of? That’s right, fear. And it’s fear that has no place to go. It’s little wonder that speaking scares the life out of people.

Let’s see, we start off nervous and then we scare ourselves half to death. How do we deal with this? It’s simple really. We just need five easy steps.

1. Take the uncertainty out of the equation. This is the basis of the “what if’s” that will plague your mind before you speak. Do your research. Find out everything about the audience and their expectations. Anything else that you may be uncertain of also needs to be researched and moved into the “known” category.

2. Practice, practice, practice. The more you practice the less worried you will be about your performance. Practice in front of a mirror until you are confident enough to practice in front of your spouse or some other supportive person.

3. Before you speak, calm yourself. Dr. Andrew Weil teaches what he calls “The Calming Breath.” It’s a Tibetan breathing exercise that calms your internal energy. It simple to describe, but takes some practice. Inhale to the count of 4, hold your breath to the count of 7, and exhale to the count of 8. All you have to remember is 4-7-8. It will help even more if you can visualize calming energy being inhaled and the nervous energy leaving your body on the exhaled breath. If it helps, give the energy colors to help you visualize it. When you practice this start off with only four sets. While this may sound simple, it has a rather profound physiological effect. So, don’t do this exercise if you have any medical problems that deep breathing could worsen.

4. Put a new frame around this picture. Everyone has an internal frame of reference. It’s what helps us make sense of what we see. If your frame of reference is how nervous you are and the mistakes you might make, you are setting yourself up for trouble. Reframe this picture from an internal reference to an external reference. Focus your mind instead on the needs of the audience. Think about the great information you will be giving them. Think of how it may beneficially affect their lives. This also provides an outlet for some of that energy we talked about earlier.

5. Don’t expect perfection. People who focus on being perfect have nothing to fall back on if a mistake is made. Their presentation can easily fall apart. So relax. Set an intention to do the best you can, knowing that it will not be perfect. If you make a mistake, and you probably will, just shrug it off and keep going. But understand the audience wants you to succeed. They are there to hear you; they are on your side. As soon as you begin to speak, all the energy you have inside that is making you so nervous has an outlet. The nerves and fear evaporate, and your focus is completely on your speech. And it will be great.

If you are really serious about making money as a paid speaker, let me give you a few things to think about.

First, the way you speak is the most prominent aspect of your personal brand. Yes, you do have a brand. You manage it either consciously or otherwise. Your brand is the sum total of everything people expect of you when you show up. Everything from what you normally wear to the things that you always do and say, and how you say them. If you are curious as to what your brand looks like, here is a quick way to check out the status. Ask five of your friends to each give you five words that describe you, one of which is how you sound. This exercise is usually an eye opener. If you think you don't give many presentations, think again. You are ALWAYS presenting. Whether you are speaking to your staff, a vendor or your supervisor you are presenting your opinion or view, and often you don't even need to say anything. Your body language can speak volumes.

Secondly, what is the main function of speech? What are we normally doing when we talk? Most of the time we are trying to influence or persuade someone to agree with us, or do something we want. Maybe it's to persuade someone to hire us, or buy some of our stuff. So, look around you. Do you have the things you want? Are you as persuasive as you can be or are you sometimes disappointed?

Lastly, have you ever been asked to speak before some group? Do you remember how nervous and scared you were? I remember when I was learning to speak, I was so nervous before I was called to the stage I almost lost my lunch. I never wanted to be that afraid again. This is the fear that holds many people back from being able to present in public. But, I have found an easy method for managing this fear. It is a Tibetan breathing technique, coupled with some simple instruction and a little visualization that keeps tension easily under control. I have covered all the details of that technique in another article.

Consider this. The main difference between the really talented kid playing basketball behind the school and the really talented professional athlete who gets paid to play is a coach. Are you serious about making money by speaking? Then get real. Get a coach. It’s the only way to get to professional grade.

13. They know that careers are cross-country runs, not 100 yard dashes that involve times of great satisfaction and, yes, pure joy, as well as onerous assignments, losses and disappointments. They plow ahead whatever the situation.

No doubt, the most important thing on your mind will be money. How much compensation should you expect? What types of benefits are offered? Don't worry about appearing greedy. It's your wallet. You might NEED to earn a certain salary level to survive. If a company cannot afford to pay you what you need, you can save a lot of time if you know this before you go through the rest of the application process.

Ask what will be expected of you and what type of environment you will be required to work in. Do you think you can work in such an environment? What can you contribute to such an environment? You should also take this time to ask about performance reviews, bonuses and raises. How will your work be appraised and by who? When will you be eligible for a raise? How much should you expect? These are all questions to ask at a job interview.

Bring up any other concerns that you may have. If you’re looking for opportunity for advancement, it would be nice to know beforehand if the company promotes within or hires management from outside the company. If you want to work for a community-minded company, this is the time to find out how the company operates in the community.

If you forget questions to ask at a job interview but think of them later, call the employer. Most people will be more than happy to address any concerns that you have.

But to compete in today’s market, you have to invest time getting acquainted with common interview questions and sample responses.

To get you started, here are a few.

Many candidates have submitted their resume for consideration. Why should I hire you over other qualified candidates?

Keep in mind that the interviewer is interested in your candidacy. That is the reason you are interviewing for the position. When answering this question, mention the three main reasons you stand out from others. Depending on your position, reasons can include your proficiency in account management, customer service, and/or strategic planning.

What do you know about our company?

There is a difference between wanting a job and taking a sincere interest in working for the hiring organization. There are no shortcuts to answering this question successfully; you have to conduct research.

What areas of your abilities would you like to improve upon?

This is a tricky way of asking, “What is your greatest weakness?”. Choose an ability that needs improvement but isn’t an integral part of your job.

Follow-Up Strategies

The interview isn’t over when you walk out of the interviewer’s office. Chances are, many candidates interviewed for the position before you did and many more will interview for the position after you. To remain competitive, it is essential that you write a follow-up letter.

This is advice most job seekers tend to ignore. And it’s a shame because the follow-up letter can seal a job offer. This is because only a small percentage of job seekers write a follow-up letter, so those who do take the time to write one stand out.

Below is a sample of a follow-up letter.

Managing headcount is tricky business. While burgeoning staff costs are always under the scanner, recruiters are equally challenged when it comes to filling certain positions which require specialized skills and experience. For an entrepreneur, who personally handles the human resource function, this problem is worse, as it just adds on to the never ending list of responsibilities. So, how does one keep staff costs under control, yet ensure that it doesn’t lead to a shortage of manpower in key positions? Hiring part-time senior workers is a very workable solution for many. Have you given it a thought?

The benefits of using temporary help are not unknown. You might have recruited summer interns, used contract workers or asked a recruitment agency for “temp” staff. While this might work well for “low impact” jobs, which require less prior experience and expertise, what do you do when the need is for people who possess both attributes in abundance? Part-time senior workers bring a wealth of knowledge and wisdom, since they’ve already been there, done that. And because they’re not looking to build a career, you don’t have to worry about headcount in the long run.

There are lots of other advantages to hiring part-time senior workers. Studies have shown that older people have a strong sense of responsibility – so you don’t have to monitor their activities. Contrary to popular opinion, there is lower absenteeism and greater punctuality among the older folk. Add to that their superior judgment and better work ethic, and you’ll find that part-time senior workers can be quite an asset.

If you take a few simple measures when signing up part-time senior workers, you will stand to gain a loyal workforce, which is as eager to please as the rookie recruit.

Allow the older people flexible and shorter working hours. While their spirits may still be willing, alas the flesh is not, and it’s in everyone’s best interests to respect that. Also, assign tasks that don’t go beyond a few weeks to part-time senior workers, since they may not be in a position to commit for a longer period. Make sure the work area is comfortable; if you can provide a place where they can rest awhile, you’ll be rocketing up the popularity charts in no time!

Also remember that your part-time senior workers aren’t in it for the money – they quit the rat race a long time ago. What they need are words of appreciation and to know that you believe in their abilities. Older people are known to pick up new skills and technologies quite easily; use that to your advantage.

Of course, your company will also benefit from the other advantages of employing a part-time workforce – including being exempt from certain workplace laws. On the flip side though, you need to watch out for any conflict between the practice of hiring part-time senior workers and an early retirement or retrenchment policy that your company may follow. Most people are looking for the secret to success; the secret to being a millionaire; the secret to winning at working. To help them find it, Amazon inventories 1,797 books promising success secrets, everything from "Mustang Sallies: Success Secrets of Women Who Refuse to Run With the Herd" to "The 21 Secrets of Self-Made Millionaires."

So, if you're one of those looking, I'll save you some time. The bottom line is this - there is no secret. There's no magical formula to follow; no short-cuts to take or lottery tickets you can purchase. People who are winning at working know it takes persistence, determination, commitment, passion, practice, focus and hard work. There are no secrets to any of that. Just look around.

Take Chester Carlson. Chester became a rich man as the successful inventor of an electrostatic paper-copying process that later became the Xerox Corporation, even though twenty corporations rejected his idea. It took Chester seven years of persistence and determination before he found one tiny company willing to purchase his invention.

Or take Julia Child. After receiving a contract for a French cookbook, Julia worked five years, with two collaborators, only to produce a manuscript that was rejected by the publisher. A year of revisions produced another rejected manuscript. But Julia refused to give up. It took eight years and a second publisher for Julia's cookbook, which sold more than a million copies, to find a bookshelf.

If you want to be winning at working, stop looking for some secret "out there" to bring you success. Instead, turn your sights inward and you'll find everything you need. You see, you're the secret to your success. But if you think you don't have what it takes, think again.

Visit any craft fair, hobbyist, volunteer organization or internet blog. Note poets, musicians, artists, athletes, hackers, spammers and graffiti artists. Determination, persistence, initiative and hard work manifests itself in many ways and places, some positive endeavors and some not so positive. But it's the same ingredients. And they're inside you waiting to be tapped.

People work on novels after a full day's work. They develop products in their garages, then figure out how to manufacture and market them. They volunteer to coach their daughter's soccer team or organize food drives for their community. They put energy into their interests and passions. They persist against hardships, set-backs and disappointments, demonstrating with their actions they have what it takes.

Stop looking for success secrets and start realizing you're the best kept secret you have. Like Moliere puts it, "The heart can do anything." Find your heart in your work and you can do anything, too.

A few months ago, one of my friends sent me a text – "I'm so glad to be part of the Marvel/DC generation!" Technically, anyone alive during the 1960's and on is part of the Marvel/DC generation, but my friend had a point – in the 1990's specially, fans were introduced to all variety of comic book characters on Saturday morning cartoons – and Iron Man is no exception.

The first Iron Man cartoon debuted twice before the 1990's – first in the 1966 series The Marvel superheroes and second in a guest spot in Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends,. Most people – my friend included – are familiar with his appearance in the 1990's. Iron Man had his own show in 1994, which ran for two seasons. Ironically, Iron Man shared the spotlight considerably not only with Jim Rhodes' future alter ego War Machine, but also with the Avengers spin-off Force Works, which consisted of classic heroes like Hawkeye and Scarlet Witch. Iron Man's arch-nemesis the Mandarin appeared, with a similarly prolific group of supervillains, including Blizzard, MODOK, Grey Gargoyle, Justin Hammer.

The next Iron Man cartoon appearance came during Spider-Man: The Animated Series, when Spider-Man teamed up with both War Machine and Iron Man against the likes of fan-favorite adversaries Venom and Carnage. Iron Man cartoons would continue with appearance in the Incredible Hulk animated series as well as a non-speaking role in the Fantastic Four cartoon.

The Iron Man cartoons have been continuing through present day. Iron Man showed up in the Ultimates-based Avengers: United They Stand as well as his own direct-to-DVD animated feature the Invincible Iron Man. Iron Man was also seen in the latest Fantastic Four: World's Greatest Hero, and there is a second Iron Man cartoon series airing soon – if it hasn't already. An older Tony Stark will also appear in the direct-to-DVD animated feature Next Avengers.

In many ways, the scattered appearance of the Iron Man cartoons through several animated series through both stand-alone series and guest spots represents a larger strategy by Marvel Comics. One of the principal charms of Marvel comes from the interactivity of its characters, which all inhabit the same fictional New York City. Since Marvel Studios now owns the rights to its own film projects, expect to see a guest appearance by Tony Stark in the upcoming Incredible Hulk, paving the way to a big screen Avengers sometime in 2011.

The movie stands somewhere in between the final two, as Stark is captured in Afghanistan by agents of the Mandarin.

Let's get to the armor itself. By now, the Iron Man comics have showcased several different versions of the armor, and not even a two hour movie can cover them all, but Jon Favreau's film does a good job covering the high points. The armor Tony first builds in Afghanistan is a rickety version of the streamlined version first seen during Shellhead's first appearance in Tales of Suspense #39. Tony would be next seen in a bulky gold armor similar in design during subsequent appearances, including The Avengers #1.
